GAULOIS CLINCH FIRST PLACE AT TELUS CUP

LÉVIS, QUE. – The Gaulois du Collège Antoine-Girouard have clinched the top seed going into the playoffs of the 2010 TELUS Cup.

The Gaulois concluded the preliminary round with a 6-0 victory over the Lévis Commandeurs, improving Antoine-Girouard’s record to 3-0-2 and eight points. Lévis ended up at 1-4 and on the outside looking in. It joined the Red Deer Optimist Rebels as the two teams who won’t play this weekend.

The Notre Dame Hounds (2-0-3) finish in second place and the St. John’s Fog Devils (2-1-2) and Mississauga Reps (2-2-1) end up third and fourth, respectively.

On Friday night at Lévis Arena, Étienne Dufresne (St-Valérien, Que.) got things started for the Gaulois when he scooped up a loose puck off a wild bounce off the end boards, and buried it past Commandeurs goaltender Derek Clavet (Montmagny, Que.). Cédric Leblanc (Marieville, Que.) scored a rebound goal and Alexandre Lemieux (Beloeil, Que.) added another as the Gaulois held a 3-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game.

Victor Beaulac (St-Hyacinthe, Que.) scored for the Gaulois in the second period and Alexandre Bergeron (Mont St-Hilaire, Que.) and Marc-Olivier Phaneuf (Boucherville, Que.) finished the scoring in the third.

Antoine-Girouard will face Mississauga in one semifinal and Notre Dame and St. John’s will meet in the other.
