Québec 5 - Slovakia 1

QUEBEC GETS FIRST WIN AT WU17 CHALLENGE

London, ON – Team Quebec came out firing on Tuesday night at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

61 shots. Five goals. And Quebec got its first win at this tournament, 5-1 over Team Slovakia at the John Labatt Centre.

The win keeps Quebec’s hopes alive to move on to the semi-finals. Quebec needs to win its final round-robin game on Wednesday against Team Pacific, which is 2-1, to even have a shot of advancing.

Quebec spread the scoring around against Slovakia. In the first period, Louis Leblanc (Kirkland, QC/Lac St-Louis, midget AAA), Philippe Lefebvre (Trois-Rivieres, QC/Drummondville, QMJHL) and Mikael Tam (Quebec City, QC/Quebec, QMJHL) scored for Quebec. The lone goal of the second came with two seconds left, when David Gilbert (Ste-Julie, QC/Antoine, midget AAA) beat Slovak goaltender Juraj Gasparovic on a penalty shot.

It was Gilbert’s second goal on a penalty shot in the tournament.

In the third, Ryan Kavanagh (Kirkland, QC/Lac St-Louis, midget AAA) found the back of the net.

Slovakia’s lone goal came in the third, when Juraj Majdan scored to end the shutout attempt of Quebec’s Maxime Clermont (Blainville, QC/Gatineau, QMJHL).
