KINGSBURY’S GOAL TURNS OUT TO BE GAME-WINNER FOR CANADA

MONCTON, NB – Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, QC/Calgary, WWHL) scored early in the third period as Canada edged the Fredericton Canadiens Midget AAA boys team 4-3 on Saturday night at the Kay Arena.

Kingsbury’s goal was assisted by Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON/Brampton, CWHL) and Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, ON/Calgary, WWHL) and it gave Canada a 4-2 lead. Fredericton scored in the final minute of the game but Canada, which dropped a 3-2 decision to the Saint John Vitos on Friday night, held on for the win.

Fredericton opened the scoring at 3:37 of the first period. But shortly after, Carla MacLeod (Calgary, AB/Calgary, WWHL) scored on a pinball play, when the shot of Cheryl Pounder (Mississauga, ON/Mississauga, CWHL) hit Delaney Collins (Pilot Mound, MB/Calgary, WWHL) and then went in off MacLeod’s skate. Fredericton, though, would score later in the first and take a 2-1 lead into the second period.

Canada scored the only two goals of the second. Katie Weatherston (Thunder Bay, ON/Montreal, CWHL) scored a nice goal when she kicked the puck to her stick and slid it under Fredericton goaltender Zach Daigle. Six minutes later, Gillian Apps (Unionville, ON/Brampton. CWHL) was rewarded for her hard work in the corner, when she jammed in a loose puck at the side of the net. Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, C/Dawson College, CEGEP) took the initial shot, with the rebound going to Apps.

That set the stage for the third, with both teams exchanging goals.

Canada is now 1-1 through two of its four games at the National Women’s Team October training camp. Team Canada returns to action on Sunday night (8:30 p.m. AST) when it will face the Moncton Flyers at the 4-Plex Arena. That will be the first of two back-to-back meetings between the teams.
