Canada 6 – Germany 1

CANADA FINISHES PRE-NATIONS CUP SCHEDULE WITH WIN

JASON LA ROSE

FÜSSEN, Germany – Kaleigh Fratkin (Burnaby, B.C./Boston, CWHL) had a goal and an assist, and Canada’s National Women’s Development Team capped pre-tournament action ahead of the 2015 Nations Cup with a 6-1 win over Germany on Friday.

The Canadians were a perfect 3-0 in exhibition play, outscoring Hungary, Austria and Germany by a combined 14-1, and holding a decisive 115-49 advantage in shots on goal.

Six different Canadians scored goals in the win; Sarah Lefort (Ormstown, Que./Boston University, HE), Victoria Bach (Milton, Ont./Boston University, HE), Shelby Bram (Ste. Anne, Man./Mercyhurst University, CHA), Renata Fast (Burlington, Ont./Clarkson University, ECAC) and Sarah Davis (Paradise, N.L./Calgary, CWHL) joined Fratkin on the scoresheet.

After killing three German power plays in the first 12 minutes, Canada opened the scoring at 12:38 with Meghan Dufault (Winnipeg, Man./University of North Dakota, WCHA) setting up Lefort.

Bach doubled the lead at 16:12, and Fratkin finished the offensive flurry 2:20 later, sending the Canadians to the dressing room with a three-goal advantage after 20 minutes.

Another two-goal spurt made it 5-0 midway through the second period; Bram scored from Louise Warren (Pembroke, Ont./Calgary, CWHL) at 8:31, and Fast found the back of the net just 35 seconds later.

Julia Zorn got the Germans on the board on the power play just past of the 11-minute mark of the third period, ending the shutout bid of Canadian netminder Erica Howe (Orleans, Ont./Brampton, CWHL).

Zorn’s goal also put a stop to Canada’s pre-tournament shutout streak, which reached 171:50.

Davis converted on a Canadian man advantage at 15:38, rounding out the scoring.

The Canadians are right back on the ice in Füssen on Saturday, opening the 2015 Nations Cup against Finland (9 a.m. ET/6 a.m. PT). They will also face Russia in preliminary play on Sunday, with the medal games scheduled for Tuesday.
