2016-17 National Women's Development Team

White 4 - Sweden 3 (OT)

BACH SCORES OVERTIME WINNER, WHITE BEATS SWEDEN

JORDAN MADY

CALGARY, Alta. – Victoria Bach (Milton, Ont./ Boston University, HE) wired a shot over the glove of Maria Omberg just 42 seconds into overtime Tuesday to nudge White past Sweden 4-3 at Canada’s National Women’s Development Team selection camp.

It’s the first win of camp for White, which dropped a 4-3 decision to Red on Monday night.

White looked to have a regulation win before the Swedes were awarded a penalty shot with zeroes on the clock in the third period after a Canadian defender closed her hand on the puck in the crease.

Hanna Olsson made no mistake, snapping a quick shot past White goaltender Julia Vandyk (Cambridge, Ont./Colgate University, ECAC) to force the extra period.

White opened the scoring just over a minute in when Emily Clark (Saskatoon, Sask./University of Wisconsin, WCHA) jumped on the rebound of a Kristyn Capizzano (Oakville, Ont./Boston College, HE) shot and beat Omberg.

That would be it for goals in an offensively-tentative first period that included only 10 shots on goal.

But it took just 12 seconds of the second for White to double its advantage; a strong forecheck behind the Swedish net caused a turnover, and the puck squirted in front and onto the stick of Ryleigh Houston (Winnipeg, Man/University of North Dakota, WCHA) who had a yawning cage to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Swedish comeback started early in the third period when Anna Borgqvist one-timed a shot past Vandyk from a sharp angle at 2:10, and Lisa Johansson roofed a shorthanded breakaway past the Canadian goaltender at 11:31 to tie the game.

But White would retake the lead just eight seconds after the Johansson goal; right off the ensuing face-off the puck made its way to Rebecca Leslie (Ottawa, Ont./Boston University, HE), who charged in off the right wing and snapped a shot past Omberg.

That set up the penalty shot goal by Olsson and the eventual game-winner by Bach, capping an eventful final 21 minutes that included four goals, 19 shots and five power plays.

After a day away from the rink Wednesday, both teams will see action again Thursday; White will meet the CIS all-stars (7:30 p.m. MT), right after Sweden faces Red (4 p.m. MT).
