Game Story

DUBOIS’ SECOND OT WINNER GIVES WHITE U18 SWEEP OVER RED

WENDY GRAVES

CALGARY, Alta. – For the second game in a row Pierre-Luc Dubois (Rimouski, Que.,/Cape Breton, QMJHL) scored the game-winner in overtime, this time only 23 seconds into the extra period as White defeated Red 4-3 to complete a three-game sweep at Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp on Tuesday.

White won all three intrasquad games in overtime.

After some hard work in the corner by Tyler Benson (Edmonton, Alta./Vancouver, WHL), Dubois picked up the puck, skated in front of the net and, while falling to the ice, slid the puck under Stuart Skinner (Edmonton, Alta./Lethbridge, WHL) for the winner.

Tanner Kaspick (Brandon, Man./Brandon, WHL) and William Bitten (Gloucester, Ont./Plymouth, OHL) each had a goal and an assist for White. Dillon Dube (Cochrane, Alta./Kelowna, WHL) added the other goal.

Jordan Kyrou (Toronto, Ont./Sarnia, OHL), Tye Felhaber (Pembroke, Ont./Saginaw, OHL) and Cameron Morrison (Aurora, Ont./Aurora, OJHL) had the goals for Red. Adam Mascherin (Maple, Ont./Kitchener, OHL) added two assists.

The goalie tandems switched teams for the last game of the intrasquad series. Carter Hart (Sherwood Park, Alta./Everett, WHL) and Evan Fitzpatrick (Lower Sackville, N.S./Sherbrooke, QMJHL) made 28 saves in the win for White. Skinner and Dylan Wells (St. Catharines, Ont./Peterborough, OHL) faced 33 shots in the Red net.

After a quick opening 20 minutes that saw no goals or penalties, Red took the lead early in the second. Hart stopped Brett Howden (Oakbank, Man./Brandon, WHL) on a breakaway, but a trailing Kyrou banged in the rebound.

Just past the midway mark of the period Fitzpatrick took over for Hart. Felhaber welcomed him to the game with a toe drag and shot that went off the near post and in.

A little more than two minutes later White finally got on the board on the power play. Kale Clague’s (Lloydminster, Alta./Brandon, WHL) point shot ended up near the goal line, where Kaspick tapped it in.

Morrison restored Red’s two-goal lead before the second intermission, getting an open look from the low slot off Mascherin’s centering pass.

White got that one back with less than a minute to go in the second, with Dube breaking in alone shorthanded and beating Skinner.

Bitten – the overtime hero in Game 1 of the camp series – got the equalizer early in the third, backhanding a rebound in from the corner of the crease.

Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team will be announced Tuesday night.
