Game Story

GOSLING SCORES TWICE, CANADA GETS FIRST WIN AT U18 WORLDS

JASON LA ROSE

DMITROV, Russia - Julia Gosling (London, Ont./London, PWHL) scored a pair of goals, leading Canada's National Women's Under-18 Team into the win column at the 2018 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship with a 4-0 triumph over Sweden on Sunday.

Kendra Woodland (Kamloops, B.C./Thompson, OMAHA) needed to make just nine saves to record the shutout in her first start of the tournament.

It took less than 90 seconds for the Canadians to take a lead they would never relinquish; Alexie Guay (Magog, Que./Stanstead College, NAPHA) found Courtney Kollman (Calgary, Alta./Edge School, CSSHL) streaking off the bench, and she beat Swedish goaltender Miranda Dahlgren to the blocker side at 1:24.

Gosling doubled the lead just shy of the 12-minute mark. Her shot under the crossbar was in and out so fast that play continued, and the goal was only reviewed after Abygail Moloughney (Nepean, Ont./Nepean, PWHL) had scored shortly after.

The Gosling goal was eventually confirmed, erasing the Moloughney marker but still putting Canada up 2-0.

The Canadians dominated play in the second period, holding Sweden without a shot on goal while directing 17 at Dahlgren on the back of four power plays, but the Swedish puck-stopper kept it a two-goal game through 40 minutes.

Gosling added her second of the game with 5:30 to go in the third period after Claire Dalton (Toronto, Ont./Toronto, PWHL) forced a turnover in the Swedish zone, and Moloughney found the empty net 52 seconds later to cap the scoring.

Canada finished with a one-sided 38-9 advantage in shots on goal.

The Canadians will enjoy an off-day before wrapping up the preliminary round against the United States on Tuesday (7:30 a.m. ET/4:30 a.m. PT).
