KESSLER BLANKS SWEDEN AS WHITE EARNS U22 WIN

CALGARY, Alta. – It wasn’t an offensive showcase like the camp opener one night earlier, but Canada White has joined Canada Red in the win column at the National Women’s Under-22 Team selection camp.

Twenty-four hours after Red used a high-powered offense to hand Sweden a 6-4 loss, White did it with defense, getting 25 saves from Christina Kessler in a 4-0 blanking of the Swedes.

Courtney Birchard opened the scoring three minutes in for White, which protected its one-goal lead for close to 30 minutes before third-period goals from Bailey Bram, Chelsea Karpenko and Natalie Spooner gave the Canadian side a little breathing room.

Hoping to jump to an early lead, just as Red had on Sunday night, White got on the board at the 3:01 mark when Birchard redirected a perfect pass from Stefanie McKeough past 16-year-old Swedish goaltender Josephin Lennström.

The game was a defensive struggle through the first two periods, with both goaltenders coming up big to keep it a one-goal game.

Kessler made her best save of the night just shy of the midway point of the second period, robbing Erika Holst with a glove save after the Swedish captain teed up a one-timer from the slot.

Sweden, playing its second game in as many nights just five days after a cross-Atlantic flight and an eight-hour time change, tired in the third period and White was there to pounce, as Bram doubled the lead 1:43 into the frame with an individual effort.

Karpenko and Spooner combined to again double the Canadian lead later in the frame – first it was Karpenko cashing in a rebound off a Spooner shot to make it 3-0 before Spooner finished off a Karpenko set up just 2:45 later for the game’s final goal.

The Swedes enjoy a night off Tuesday, while Red and White will meet in an all-Canadian battle of unbeatens, with puck drop at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena set for 7 p.m. MT.
